Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking - Lemosho Route 8 Days

Route Overview

From the west, this route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro. It provides the opportunity to visit Shira Plateau (Cathedral Peak) and Shira Caldera. In a pleasant hike, the Lemosho Route connects Shira Ridge and Shira 2 Camp. Climbers will encounter little traffic until they reach the Machame route. Following that, Lemosho takes the southern circuit of the Machame Route, passing through Lava Tower, Barranco, and Barafu.

The minimum number of days required for this route is seven, but eight days is recommended because it allows for more time to acclimate and reach the summit. This route, like Machame, is scenically spectacular and varied. Lemosho is highly recommended and has an abundance of wildlife including Colobus monkeys, various bird species, and small jackals that come over to forage during the dry season from the Longido game controlled area.

This is an acclimatization day because you will gain over 650 meters by beginning your walk across a beautiful valley outside the Shira caldera rim (3600m). After a few hours, you will arrive at Shira caldera. Shira, a high altitude desert, is one of three peaks that erupted in the Kilimanjaro ecosystem. The peak collapsed, forming a crater that was eventually filled with lava from Kibo peak. Weather and volcanic activity have eroded and blasted away its rim. Shira one campsite at 3500m elevation is where you’ll camp and sleep.

Distance: 7km
Hiking time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland and rocky

This day, you will trek east across Shira plateau, stopping at (Cathedral peak 3850m) to acclimate. Upon reaching this peak, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Mt. Meru and Kibo Peak. We will then continue trekking to Shira two camp, where you will spend the night.

After lunch, you’ll get some rest and another acclimatization hike up the scree slopes towards the southern ice field. You’ll then return to camp for supper and an overnight stay.

Elevation: 3900m to 4620m.
Distance: 8 km.

The ascent to the Barafu ridge campsite is difficult on this day due to the altitude. Because of the short distance, the walk only takes a few hours, but it is steep and requires a slow pace to avoid fatigue. You’ll be trekking through an alpine desert. A strong, cold wind is likely to blow from Kibo peak and its ice. You’ll eat dinner at 4620 meters, then rest until midnight, when you’ll attack the summit.

Elevation: 4620m to 5895m to 3100m
Distance: 15km

At this point, you will have views of the fabled crater and its glaciers in front of you. After an hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the famous snows, you will reach Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak. You will spend some time here taking photographs, but this will depend on how you feel.

After completing your summit activities, you will return to the Barafu campsite for lunch, rest, and equipment collection before continuing down through moorland and heath zone to the Mweka campsite. Mweka Campsite for dinner and overnight.
