The Marangu route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most well-known route. This is the only route that offers dormitory-style sleeping cottages as an alternative to camping. Mandara and Kibo Huts each have 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut has 120 bunk beds. Mattresses and pillows are provided, but sleeping bags are still necessary. The huts all include shared dining halls and basic washrooms, with flushing toilets and running water in the lower huts and lengthy drop toilets and buckets of water in Kibo Hut.
Because of its mild slope and direct approach, many people prefer Marangu as the simplest path on the mountain. The route’s short duration, however, makes altitude adaptation difficult. Mount Kilimanjaro is approached from the southeast. Because the ascent and descent are on the same trail, Marangu is less picturesque than the other routes. Because of this, it is also the busiest route.
Marangu is available as a five- or six-day private climb with Lomo Tanzania Safari. On day three at Horombo Hut, the five-day variant does not include an acclimatization day.
